Establishment of multimodal connections along Adriabike cycling route – the INTER BIKE II project was approved at Interreg V-A Italy-Slovenia Cooperation Programme 2014-2020 call for low-carbon strategies. The Inter Bike II project promotes cycling as a form of sustainable mobility while running daily errands or discovering sights of the cross-border area.  Regional Development Centre Koper is lead project partner. Other project partners include the Municipalities of Koper and Monfalcone, Development Agency ROD Ajdovščina and Local Action Group of Eastern Veneto VEGAL.

The partners have been introducing pilot multimodal bike & bus services along the Adriabike cycling route, which connects the Alps with the Adriatic Sea, as well as the boat connections for bike transports. In the summer 2018 and 2019, a cross-border bus with a bike trailer drove between Koper, Trieste, Grado and Cormons. The bus service connects Adriabike and Alpe Adria (Salzburg – Grado) route.  In the summer 2019, a boat for the transport of bikes experimentally drove along the Lemene River in Veneto. The boat, which has been driving between Bibione and the natural area of Vallevecchio near Caorle since the summer 2019, shortens the cycling route across the Venetian Lagoon. The travellers with electrical bikes will have fewer difficulties to cycle this area since the Italian partner will place new charge points for electrical vehicles.  In the municipality of Izola new signposts on the cycling routes have been placed, while in the Venetian Lagoon markings for night navigations. An investment is also going to be made by the Municipality of Koper, which will build a new section of a cycling route leading to Adriabike in Hrvatini, near the border.

Moreover, the partnership intends to incentivise cross-border cooperation between local and regional governments’ spatial and traffic planning and promote sustainable mobility. A cross-border council will be set-up consisting of representatives of decision makers and stakeholders. Networking among tourist service providers will be promoted and improvement of services for cyclists. The partners have already started these activities in the past Inter Bike project in the past programming period.

An important result of the project is also a web platform, which shows some of the most important remote cycling connections of the western Slovenia and local cycling routes in this part of the country, which thus has started to present itself as a uniform cycling destination. The platform offers useful information for travel planning in one place.

The project worth 1 million euros will end in October 2020.
